Hosta 'Aoki'

This "Fortunei type" cultivar has been around for a very long time. It was registered by the American Hosta Society in 1987 as H. fortunei 'Aoki' but the name has been changed after the monograph, The Genus Hosta by G. Schmid (1991), determined that there really was no species called H. fortunei.

'Aoki' forms a 21 inch high mound that spreads to about 52 inches in width. The dark green to bluish green leaves have average substance and are not wavy or corrugated. Funnel shaped, pale lavender flowers are borne in late July.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "...virtually indistinguishable from 'Fortunei Hyacinthina'."

Similar cultivars include H. 'Simpers Blue Leaf' and H. 'Zager Blue'.

Several sports of this cultivar have been developed including H. 'Alley Oop', H. 'Aoki Variegated', H. 'Marla', H. 'Okaydokey', H. 'Okefenokee', H. 'Raindance' and H. 'Sundance'.
