This is one of those cases where there are two hostas with the same name. One is registered and, therefore, the "official" version of H. 'Carder Blue' while the other is a non-registered plant and needs to be renamed to avoid further confusion.

This cultivar with H. 'Tokudama' background has been around a long time and it was registered by The American Hosta Society in 1986. It grows into a large size hosta about 18 inches high with a spread of 38 inches. The blue-green foliage is heavily corrugated and has thick substance. Near white flowers bloom from late June into July.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "...found by Alex Summers of Delaware in the garden of Ellen Carder...Apparently, the name 'Carder Blue' represents more than one plant." This second plant is more common in the nursery trade. It is a small to medium size plant with blue-green foliage which is more cupped than the registered plant. It reportedly bears lavender flowers.
