This naturally occurring variety of the species H. sieboldii from Japan was first described by Dr. Fumio Maekawa. It is a small size plant with green foliage which is moderately shiny on the bottom, narrowly ovate and has thick substance.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "...as being "very late flowering" and related to H. tardiva..."
