Alan Bloom (1906-2005) is often credited with popularizing the concept of the island bed in the landscape. His nursery, Blooms of Bressingham, is still located near the town of Diss in Norfolk, England. The Dell Garden around his house at Bressingham Manor still contains some of the original island beds.
