This is a problem that is
common to
Hosta sieboldiana type plants that have yellow
in their foliage. The classic example is
Hosta sieboldiana 'Frances Williams' which
seems very
susceptible to this problem.
Spring desiccation, also called "Spring
Burn", is a physiological disorder causes browning
streaks to appear between the veins on the yellow areas
of the leaf. It does not affect plants that are a solid
green or blue-green color. It is not the result of a
disease or insect infestation.
There is no treatment for
this problem. Many of the yellow or otherwise variegated cultivars
of Hosta sieboldiana do not suffer from Spring
Desiccation. When growing the susceptible types, put
them in sites that do not get direct sunlight especially
in the early spring or in late afternoon in late summer to minimize the impact. |
