In 1577, a "garden of simple plants" was established at this site thus becoming the first botanical garden in Paris. In 1626, it became the jardin de plantes médicinales and later the jardin du Roi.

The garden was first opened to the public in 1640. During the French Revolution, a zoo was established also. Now, there is a mineralogy museum, paleontology museum and entomology museum in the garden. It also houses the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution.

Located in Paris on the left bank, this wonderful municipal garden is a pleasant place to stroll and relax between visits to the Louvre or Eiffel Tower. You can sit on a bench and "people watch" for hours surrounded by nice plantings of annuals and perennials.
