Arnold Arboretum is a part of Harvard University and is the oldest public arboretum in North America. It is the site of research on all types of plants and is part of the Boston park system for viewing by the public at no fee. Of course, a major part of the arboretum is educational with programs for the professional horticulturist as well as the general gardening public. It is also the site of a huge herbarium with over 1.3 million pressed and dried specimens of plants from around the world.

As the oldest arboretum in the U.S. this is a sort of Mecca for plant people. The collections are large and well maintained with great labeling. There are ancient specimen trees and shrubs that would be hard to find anywhere else in the country. From an historical perspective alone, this is a must see garden.
