The botanic gardens are located in southern Wake County, North Carolina about 20 minutes south of the State Capitol in Raleigh. The garden had its start in August 1988, when Tony and Michelle Avent moved to this 2.25 acre site from their original smaller garden in West Raleigh. At that time, the new property consisted of a recently constructed house in the middle of a tobacco field with a vine-covered swamp at the south, where deceased farm implements were buried.

This is actually a private garden created by the Avents. You can wander through the gardens and then go into the nursery and buy many of the plants you have just seen. Tony is an avid plant hunter and travels around the world to find new plants. Many of them are introduced in the garden.

He is also a well known hosta hybridizer who has introduced many new and interesting cultivars of hosta.
