A seedling of the species, H. rupifraga, this cultivar was registered jointly by Dr. Ralph (Herb) Benedict and Dr. Jim and Jill Wilkins, all of Michigan in 1995. It forms a medium size (12 inches high by 30 inches wide) mound of very wavy, smooth textured foliage. Medium lavender flowers open from mid-August into September.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "The waviness and rich blue foliage color give 'Rhapsody in Blue' its distinctive appearance."
