This sport of H. 'August Moon' was registered in 1985 by Bob Solberg of Green Hill Farm in North Carolina. It is a large size (22 inches high by 52 inches wide) plant with a gold center that is often used as a focal point or specimen in the landscape. The foliage is broadly oblong to ovate, slightly wavy and slightly corrugated. Pale lavender, funnel shaped flowers open from mid-July into August.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), this cultivar "...has become the standard for gold-centered, green-margined sports of 'August Moon'...it presents shade gardeners with many possible landscaping options."

From the Field Guide to Hostas by Mark Zilis (2014), "...has proven to be an excellent grower in both garden and nursery settings. In the landscape, 'September Sun' makes an effective specimen plant or very colorful ground cover."

The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by Diana Grenfell (2009) states: "Vigorous, a rapid increaser. Easy to grow. A forerunner of many similar cultivars."

"Plant is a variegated sport of H. 'August Moon' with yellow center and green margin. There is high contrast between margin and center. A plant in the trade with barely distinguishable chartreuse margins and yellowish green center of little contrast is not this taxon."
