Dutchman's Pipe, Birthwort, Pipevine or Snakeroot

This is a rather large genus with over 500 species that are native to widely differing parts of the world. The name is from the Greek for "best" and "childbirth" since it was thought to be of use in the birth process. It was also supposed to be good for snake bite. Today, it is used as an astringent bitter preparation.
