This genus of 10 to 16 species consists of shrubs and trees has alternate, irregularly lobed leaves and separate male and female flowers either on the same or different trees. The fruit are black berries that are edible but quite messy in the landscape situation. Silkworms feed on the leaves of Morus alba.
