Ninebark

Depending on which taxonomist you listen to, there are between 6 and 20 species in this genera. Most are native to North America and Northeastern Asia.

The common name comes from the belief that there are nine layers of shredding bark on the stems. Physocarpus comes from the Green, physa which means "bellows" or "bladder" and carpos the word for fruit.
