There are currently around 65 species in this genus but that number has been changing since there have been more but some have been shifting to other genera by taxonomists. Even though the common name would indicate otherwise, they are, in fact, not closely related to the genus, Petunia. It is named for the French physician and herbalist, Jean Ruelle who served King Francis I of France.
