This is another of those genera where taxonomists have a wide range of ideas as to what should be included. That is why it is estimated that there are between 6 and 37 species in this genus. They come from the warm temperate to tropical regions of Southeastern Asia.

Recently, Ravenna grass, Erianthus ravennae has been moved to this genus.
