Erect plant
3-4 feet tall by 12-18 inches wide
Blue or violet, in upright spike-like terminal racemes, individual flowers are 1-2 inches tall and are shaped like small helmets or hoods with a beak in front.
Mid to late summer
Alternate, 3-5 inches wide. palmately veined, divided to the base, each segment again divided to near its base segments are linear to lanceolate.
 
 
 
This species is distinguished from A. carmichaelii by having leaf blades that are divided to the base and it blooms earlier.
