Allium giganteum
Giant Onion
5-8
Central Asia

Erect plant
3-4 feet with a 2 feet spread.
Lilac-pink flowers are borne in a 5-6 inches wide, globose inflorescence atop a sturdy flower scape 3-4 feet tall. The flowers color from the top of the inflorescence to the base, changing from green to lilac-pink.
Late spring to early summer.
Basal leaves, stiff and linear, up to 18 inches long, 2 inches wide, very smooth leaf surface. If leaves are cut or bruised, they smell like onions.
Giant onion is very easily grown if placed in full sun and well-drained soil.
The AlIium genus is subject to a bulb rot caused by Sclerotium cepivorum which prevents the flower stalk from developing. Selection of clean bulbs and removing diseased plants are effective control measures.
