This species develops into a dense vegetative clump
12-18 inches tall
Small, pale purple flowers are carried in dense, globe-shaped umbels atop 18 inches tall flower scapes.
Late spring to early summer.
The small bulbs of this species produces 1-2 leaves, 6-10 inches long. Leaves are dark green, cylindrical and hollow. The hollow leaves distinguish this species from Allium tuberosum, which has flat leaves. Leaves have a mild, oniony flavor.
Easily grown perennial for sun or partial shade in well-drained soils.
 
  • 'Forescate'  - Vigorous grower with showy rose-pink flowers. This cultivar is not common.
Chives is known for its culinary use, but it can serve as an edging ornamental. Clipping the leaves for culinary purposes will help keep a neater appearance during the growing season
