Alnus plutinosa

Upright, with an oval to pyramidal head, often multi-stemmed.
40-60 feet tall with a spread of 20-40 feet
Plants are monoecious. Flowers are reddish-brown male flowers in a 2-4 inch long catkin, females in an egg-shaped catkin. The female catkins become woody cones with 5 lobed scales.
Early to mid-March
Leaves are alternate, simple, 2-4 inches wide, oval with a coarsely double serrate margin, appearing scalloped, dark green in color.
Fall color is nonexistent.
Buds are valvate, stalked, ¼-½ inch long, reddish, very prominent.
 
Fruit is a nutlet, borne in persistent woody cones maturing in October
