Multi-stem, suckering tree or shrub.
6 to 20 feet tall.
Yellow to brown catkins borne from February to March
 
Alternate, simple, 2 to 4” long, 1 1/4 to 2 1/2” wide, ovate or obovate, acute, cuneate, with uniform fine teeth along the margin, dark green and glabrous above, paler and pubescent beneath especially on the veins; petiole-smooth, about 1” long.
 
 
 
Cone shaped about 1/2 inch long by 1/4 inch wide and smaller than those of A. rugosa.

 

Will colonize wet sites.

 
 
Similar to A. rugosa differing chiefly in its leaves, which are usually broadest above the middle and have the margins set with fine, nearly regular teeth.
