8-12 inches tall by 6-9 inches wide
Solitary and terminal flower is 1-2˝ inches wide, poppy-like, in shades of red, blue and white. The species has 6-8 sepals but double flowering cultivars exist. In fact, the species is not often used because cultivars with more vibrant colors are more popular.
Early spring
Basal leaves are twice or ternately compound with narrow-cuneate segments stem leaves cut into many narrow divisions.
 
 
  • 'DeCaen' - hybrids include a number of single selections of various colors.
  • 'Mr. Fokker' - violet-blue
  • 'Sylphide' - light purple
  • 'The Bride' - white
  • 'Florist Mixture' - mixed colors.
  • 'His Excellency' - Scarlet sepals with white bases surrounding a black center. The flowers are large.
  • 'St. Brigid' - hybrids contains several semidouble selections of various colors including:'Lord Lieutenant', deep blue 'Mount Everest', white 'The Admiral', blue 'The Governor', scarlet and a mixture.
