Upright, pyramidal to narrowly pyramidal, becoming irregular with an oval crown at maturity.
50-70 feet tall with a spread of 30-60 feet
Flowers similar to B. alleghaniensis.
 
Leaves are alternate, simple, 2-4 inches long, ovate, sharp pointed, coarsely and doubly serrate, with a rounded to wedge-shaped base.
Fall color is yellow.
 
Bark is smooth, reddish-brown on young stems, becoming creamy white, exfoliating in thin, papery strips.
Fruit similar to B. alleghaniensis.
