Upright, narrow, with an open, conical crown, often multi-stemmed.
20-40 feet tall with a spread of 10-20 feet
Flowers and fruit similar to B. alleghaniensis, except the male catkins are borne singly, 2-3˝ inches long, while the female catkins are in small clusters, 1-1˝ inches long.
 
Leaves are alternate, simple, 2-3˝ inches long, triangular, with a long tapering apex, coarsely and doubly serrate, square at the base, lustrous dark green in color.
Fall color is yellow.
 
Bark is chalky white, not peeling, with distinct dark triangular patches below branches.
