A 3-4 feet tall naked flower stem with a terminal raceme rises above a grass-like clump of foliage 24 inches tall.

Star-shaped flowers are borne in a terminal raceme composed of 20-80 flowers per stem. Each flower has 6 perianth segments with flower colors of blue, purple, white or cream. The flowers twist around the maturing seed capsule as they wither.
Late spring to early summer.
The basal leaves are linear to strap shaped, which creates a grasslike appearance. The leaves can be up to 24 inches long and 1 inch wide.
