Upright, spreading, flat to rounded crown, single or multiple stems with trunk divided close to the ground.
20-30 feet tall with a spread of 25-35 feet
Flowers are reddish-purple, ˝ inch long, borne in clusters of 4-8 along stems and trunk, very showy.
Mid to late April
Leaves are alternate, simple, 3-5 inches wide, heart-shaped, with an entire margin.
Fall color is yellow-green to yellow
 
Bark is brownish-black to black with orange inner bark showing through. Stems are slender, reddish-brown, zig-zag.
Fruit is a brown pod, 2-3 inches long, ripening in October
