Tuberous perennial often growing in or near water in swamps, ditches, etc.
 
 
 
Resembles wild carrot (Daucus carota) but is distinguished from it by the smooth, purple spotted stems and leaves that are 2 to 3 times pinnately compound with larger leaflets.
 
 
 

The specific epithet, maculata, means spotted.
