Multi-stemmed shrub, forming a rounded top with a leggy or open base.
8-10 (up to 15) feet tall with a slightly smaller spread.
Plants are monoecious. The male flowers are borne in showy catkins, to 3 inches long, the female flowers are not showy

Leaves are alternate, simple, 2˝ -6 inches long, rounded to oval, with an oblique, rounded to cordate base, doubly serrate, leathery, softly pubescent.
Fall color is a poor yellow-green.
 
 
Fruit is a nut, up to ˝ inch long, edible, surrounded by a prominent, downy involucre, twice as long as the nut.
