Leaves create a mound and the stiff stems carry the flowers well above the mound
2-3 feet but some cultivars are taller
The inflorescence is a huge, loose panicle, 15-20 inches long and 6-8 inches wide. The spikelets are loosely arranged on the branches. Flower color can be silvery, light green, or purple with several colors occurring together in the same panicle. The inflorescence is very delicate.
 
Leaf blades ⅕ inches wide and up to 2 feet long. They may be flat or rolled the upper surface ribbed lengthwise. The ribs and margins are scabrous while the lower leaf surface is smooth. Leaves are dark green.
