Echinacea tennesseensis Tennessee Coneflower 3-8 Eastern United States - Species was thought to be extinct until 1968 when a few wild populations were found growing in central Tennessee. Perennial that grows on cedar glades dominated by the red cedar (Juniperus virginiana).   Similar to the common purple coneflower (E. purpurea) whose ray flowers curve downwards. Those of this species (E. tennesseensis) curve upwards.           Echinacea is derived from a Greek term for hedgehog, which apparently refers to the scales of the receptacles, which are prickly.
