Upright growing shrub, with arching branches with prickles, forming a rounded outline. It has a suckering habit of growth.

Plants are dioecious. Flowers are greenish-white, borne in an umbel, 1 inch across, in June-July and are not showy.
 
Leaves are alternate, palmately compound with 5 (occasionally 7) leaflets, each being 1-1˝ inches long, glossy bright green in color, with a crenate-serrate margin and an acute tip. Petioles are long, up to 4 inches in length.
Fall color is nonexistent, or a poor yellow-green.
 
Stems are light brown, warty, with a single (occasionally double) prickle, to ˝ inch long, below each leaf scar.
Fruit is a 2-5 seeded black drupe, ripening in September
