Miscanthus sinensis
Chinese Silver Grass, Eulalia Grass, Japanese Silver Grass
5-9
Eastern Asia

Upright clump
Up to 8 feet tall with a 3-4 feet spread
The flowers are pale pink to reddish and are borne in a loose, terminal panicle that is 8-10 inches long. The flowers are long lasting when dried.
The actual bloom period of the species is fall but the flower effect of the plume lasts nearly all winter. In Northern zones, flowering starts in early October.
Leaf blades are mostly basal arising from a large clump. Leaves are flat, 3-4 feet long, ⅜ inches wide, tapered to a slender tip and sharply serrate.
Performs poorly in shade.

Other Miscanthus species:

  • M. floridulis - Giant Chinese Silver Grass. This species is certainly the giant of the Miscanthus. It grows 12-15 feet tall. Excellent as a screen or background plant for smaller grasses. The flower plume develops in mid- September and provides a super winter effect. The stems are very strong and are resistant to the winter ravages of ice, wet snow and wind. Stems will persist until spring or later unless cut down.

  • M. sacchariflorus var. robustus - Giant Silver Banner Grass. 5-8' tall, useful for edges of ponds and streams. It is slightly invasive but grows well in normal soil conditions or those with temporary flooding.

  • M. transmorrisonensis - Evergreen Miscanthus, Formosa Maiden Grass. This evergreen species is Hardy to zone 7. Narrow green leaves form dense clumps 2-3 feet tall and wide. Silky, reddish brown flower plumes arch out from the plant giving the clump a feathery, airy texture.Fine-textured flowers catch the breeze and add movement to the garden.
