Leaves alternate, short-oval to orbicular-ovate, abruptly pointed, petiole to 1 inch long, sheaths short, deciduous stems are jointed. Light green foliage turns to crimson in the fall.
 
 
 
 
Polygonum is derived from Greek poly, many and gony, knee joint and is in reference to the swollen-jointed stems.
