A narrow, round-topped tree with an open, irregular crown.
50-70 feet tall with a spread of 20-40 feet
Plants are dioecious. Flowers are in catkins, appearing before the leaves and are not showy.
 
Leaves are alternate, simple, 3-4 inches long, rounded to elliptic, with a broadly wedge-shaped to truncate base, with very coarse, irregular, wavy teeth and a long petiole, flattened near the base.
Fall color is greenish-yellow and falling quickly.
 
Bark is smooth, grayish green in color.
Fruit is a 3-4 valved capsule ¼-⅓ inch long, the seeds having cottony tufts of hairs.
