Fragrant Sumac
 
4-6 feet tall with a spread of 6-10 feet
Leaf scars are circular, prominently raised of f the stem.
Leaves are alternate, trifoliolate, ovate, 1½-3 inches long, pubescent terminal leaflet wedge-shaped, the laterals rounded and oblique, bluish-green in color.
Plants are dioecious to polygamo-dioecious. Flowers are yellowish, borne in 1 inch long male catkins, or the females in a short terminal panicle, in mid to late March.
Stems are slender, pubescent, emitting a distinct spicy fragrance when bruised.
Low, irregular spreading shrub, usually prostrate with ascending branches.
Fruit is a red, hairy drupe, ¼ inch in diameter, ripening in August- September and briefly persisting.
Fall color is orange to reddish-purple.
