Upright, with a straight trunk and a narrow, oblong crown
30-50 feet tall with a spread of 20-35 feet
Flowers are white, 1 inch across, extremely fragrant, borne in dense racemes, 4-8 inches long, showy.
Late May to early June
Leaves are alternate, pinnately compound with 7-19 leaflets, each being elliptic, 1-2 inches long, with an entire edge, dark bluish-green in color.
Fall color is yellow-green.
 
Bark is reddish-brown to black, deeply furrowed into a basket weave pattern, with orangish inner wood showing through. Stems are slender, zig-zag, with a pair of ˝ inch long prickles at each node.
Fruit is a flat, brown-black pod, 2-4 inches long, ripening in October and persisting.
