Usually a large shrub or small tree, with upright branches and a bushy habit.
Capable of growing to 60 feet tall, but usually smaller under landscape conditions.
Flowers are white, with 5 petals, cup-shaped, to 2½ inches wide, fragrant, borne solitary, and showy.
July-August
Leaves are alternate, simple, 1-3½ inches long, elliptic, both ends tapered, remotely and finely toothed, dark green in color.
Fall color is a beautiful orange to scarlet.
 
Bark is reddish, mottled, smooth, peeling off in large flakes. Exfoliating bark is quite ornamental.
Fruit is a 5 angled, woody, hairy capsule, about ¾ inch long.
