Broad, tufted clump
6-8 inches tall and 12-15 inches wide.
The fragrant flowers are about ¾ inch across and are deep violet, sometimes rose or white. The flowers are borne on peduncles that arise directly from the base or crown. The irregularly symmetrical flowers have 5 petals and 5 sepals.
 
Leaves are cordate-ovate to reniform, 1-2 inches wide, obtusely serrated and are often finely pubescent. The often leafy, persistent stipules are ovate-lanceolate.
