Tufted perennial forming a mat
4-6 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide
Yellow flowers in 3-8 flowered corymbs borne on flower scapes, which appear above the foliage. The flowers have 5 sepals and 5 petals. The small fruit are inedible. Waldsteinia has 2-5 pistils and smaller fruit than the related plant, Duchesnea indica.
Late spring to early summer.
Basal leaves has a long petiole, 3 leaflets palmately compound leaflets wedge shaped dentate, or crenate at the apex, sometimes incised. Leaves are similar to the true strawberry, Fragaria x ananassa.
 
 
Waldstenia temata - Siberian Barren Strawberry is similar to W. fragarioides except that W. temata has a more compact habit.
 
Waldsteinia was named for Count Franz Adam Waldstein-Wartenburg, an Austrian botanist (1759-1823).
