Accessories -
There
are several pieces of equipment or accessories that will help you in
the care and management of the fish in you backyard pond. They come in
a wide variety but here are some examples:
Nets
- Occasionally, you may need to catch your fish. Hopefully, this will
not be needed very often. The less you handle the fish, the better to
avoid injury or damage.
Nets of all types are available but you need to consider the length
of the handle and the size of the fish you will be catching. It is not
easy to catch fish even in a relatively small pond so make sure that the
net size is adequate to catch the type of fish that you are after. It is
hard enough to catch them without having them jump out before you get
them out of the water.
Fish
Shelters - Especially in shallow ponds, it is important to
provide a place for the fish to escape from predators such as raccoons
or great blue herons. Commercial wire shelters are now available or you
can use a chimney flue pipe as a refuge for your fish. They will quickly
learn to use them after they are placed in the pond.
