Hosta 'Chris' China Star'

This non-registered cultivar was originated by Christina Brinkmann of Germany. It is a hybrid of H. 'China Girl' which grows into a medium size plant about 12 inches high by 20 inches wide. The foliage is narrowly elliptical and starts the season yellow but turns greener later in the summer. Its petioles are dark red and the color extends up into the leaf blade.

An article by Josh Spece of In The Country Garden & Gifts in Iowa in The Online Hosta Journal (2020) states that, "Hosta ‘Chris’ China Star’ is the debut from German hybridizer Christina Brinkmann, and turned out to be one of my favorite new hostas this season. H. 'Chris’ China Star' has narrow, bright yellow, glossy leaves held on deep red petioles. Leaf edges are wavy and the petiole color is deep and saturated. The foliage turns greener throughout the summer, but about the time the red flower scapes appear in late summer, the leaves begin to blush red. The flowers themselves are especially nice, as well. The plant seems to be a strong grower and looked good all season."
