According to The Genus HOSTA by W. George Schmid (1991), "Plants under this name are a mix of all-green and variegated forms. The name is used in Japan to indicate smallness and has been applied to a number of different taxa. In North America it is utilized for a small white-margined taxon similar to H. 'Ginko Craig'."

Schmid cites Horinaka as the originator of the cultivar.
