There are about 50 species of herbaceous perennials and bulb plants in this genus. They are native to Central and Southern Africa.

The genus name Cyrtanthus derives from the Greek words kyrtos, meaning curved, and anthos, a flower, and refers to the curved perianth tube of many species.
