Franklin Tree

Discovered along the Altamaha River in the state of Georgia in the United States and named for Benjamin Franklin. It is thought to now be extinct in the wild. Related to the genus, Stewartia, but differs in the following traits:

  • Does not have exfoliating bark

  • Has sessile (non-stalked) flowers

  • Has fruit that is persistent along a central axis
