Cactus, Prickly Pear

Named for the ancient Greek city of Opus, this genus contains many species of plants commonly called cactus. They are native to Mexico, North America and South America, although they are associated with desert environments, there are also many that survive well in temperate zones. The common name comes from the Greek, kaktos, which referred to any prickly plant.
