Snakeroot, Milkwort

This is a genus which involves some disagreement as to the number of species to include. Depending on the taxonomist consulted there may be as few as 350 and as high as 725 species of Polygala. They are primarily native to North America and South America with other coming from Africa and Asia. The name comes from the Greek for "much milk" since it was thought that cattle who consumed it gave more milk.
