Round-headed, often multiple-trunked, small tree.
20-25 feet tall with a spread of 15-20 feet

Flowers are greenish yellow, borne in a corymb, not important.

Leaves are opposite, simple, 3 lobed, 1½-3½ inches long, each lobe triangular in shape, slightly serrate, lustrous dark green in color, with a petiole nearly as long or longer than the blade, the overall shape somewhat resembling a duck's foot.
Fall color is yellow-orange to red.
 
Bark is platy, mottled, exfoliating in orange, gray and black shades.
Fruit is a samara, fairly small ¾-1 inch long, with the wings pointing straight down.
 
 

 
Trident maple is a small tree, often with several branches close to the ground. Its fall color is a mixture of yellow, orange and red. Insects and disease are not a problem and it tolerates dry soils.
