Sycamore Maple, Planetree Maple
 
 
Broadly oval to rounded
40-60 feet tall by 30-50 feet wide
Growth Rate: moderate
Yellowish-green, monoecious, in clusters.
 
Opposite, simple, 3-6 inches long, broadly ovate-elliptic, 5 lobed and coarsely toothed, apex of lobes pointed, base heart-shaped veins prominent.
Brown
Green, terminal bud ¼ inches long, lateral buds 1/16 inches wide, lateral buds on leaf scars immediately below terminal bud.
Scaly, grayish to reddish-brown
Samara, brown, 1¼-2 inches long, in pairs joined with wings at a narrow angle.
 
 

  • 'Leopoldii' - yellow and pink variegated leaves
  • 'Atropurpureum' - leaves that are dark green above and purple below.
 

Tolerance of salt spray, wind and dry soils are the main positive features of the sycamore maple. However, dead wood is present on old trees because of canker and seedlings can be a weed problem.
