Upright, openly pyramidal, tightly oval, or globose.
40-60 feet tall with a spread of 30-40 feet
Plants are monoecious. Flowers are borne in catkins the males growing 1½ inches long, the females growing 1½-3 inches long, with large, conspicuous 3 lobed bracts.
 
Leaves are alternate, simple, 2½-5 inches long, sharply and doubly serrate, ovate, with a rounded or cordate base.
Fall color is yellow-green to yellow.
Buds are imbricate, conical, brown to reddish, pressed close to the stem and curling around it, ¼-⅓ inch long.
Bark is medium gray, smooth and fluted, becoming rough and scaly at maturity.
Fruit is a nut, ¼ inch long, borne at the base of a bract.
 
Used in making hedges and pleached alleys

  • 'Columnaris' - narrow columnar tree, almost egg-shaped - erroneously called 'Fastigiata '.
  • 'Fastigiata' - upright in habit, branching more vase shaped as the tree grows older.
