Erect plant
18-24 inches tall by 12 inches spread.
Flower heads are 2 inches wide, borne on long slender peduncles, blue ray flowers are toothed as if cut off with a pinking shears. The flower is surrounded by strawlike, papery bracts.
Midsummer
Leaves are mostly basal, lanceolate to oblanceolate, 8-12 inches long, entire or sparsely toothed. Each side of the leaf is tomentose and there are 3 veins that run the length of the leaf.
 
 
  • var. alba - Silvery-white flowers, not as attractive as the species.
  • 'Bicolor' - Flower has white petals and a dark center.
  • 'Blue Giant' - Pale blue flowers.
  • 'Major' - Lavender-blue flowers, 30-36 inches tall.
 
Catananche is derived from Greek, katanangke which means a strong incentive, as plants were used in love potions in early times.
