Many plant species were "discovered" by plant explorers in this region and were then introduced to the rest of the world. This area has a "moderate" climate that experiences frost in most areas but not heavy freezes. Zones next to the northern coast of the  Mediterranean are often quite warm and dry which will be reflected in the plants that are locally native.
